Dementia Action Week 2026

This Dementia Action Week, our Dementia Navigators are sharing a vital reminder: don't always assume the issue is dementia.

For family carers, it is important not to assume that sudden changes in mood, memory, or behaviour are simply 'part of the condition.' These shifts could also be caused by treatable medical issues like infections, pain, dehydration or medication side effects.

Try the 'PINCH ME' checklist to spot common triggers:

  • Pain: Is the person physically hurting?

  • Infection: Do they have a fever, UTI, or chest infection?

  • Nutrition: Are they hungry or eating poorly?

  • Constipation: Have they been able to open their bowels regularly?

  • Hydration: Are they drinking enough fluids?

  • Medication: Have they had a recent change, missed a dose, or is it the combination?

  • Environment: Is the room too noisy, unfamiliar, too hot, or too cold?

Using this tool helps you advocate for your loved one when they cannot communicate their needs. If you identify any concerns, contact a medical professional or use the NHS 111 Online service for urgent advice.
